It’s finally here! Fall is my favorite season. The colors, the light, the food, and the taste of new beginnings (and it’s also my birthday!). The perfect chance for a wardrobe reset. Here is my Fall Capsule Wardrobe 2020.

There is no need to start from scratch. It incorporates your fail-safe wardrobe essentials and shifts in favor of comfort to fit a more casual lifestyle.

New to the capsule wardrobe world? Then have a look at this step-by-step guide.

Dress Code

The Fall Capsule Wardrobe 2020 aims to revamp the basics into relaxed silhouettes and outfits more suitable to spend time at home as opposed to going out. It’s nuanced by neutral colors and soft fabrics. In this scenario, oversized sweaters and “mom jeans” are perfect for making us feel as if wrapped up in a cozy blanket. Terms such as baggy and slouchy are the style trends for our new socially distanced lives.

Fall is the time when I fall in love with my wardrobe again. And when I crave the nostalgia and comfort of my childhood. Lately, I’ve been on a 90’s movie and music binge to escape the uncertainty of this time. I know I am not alone. Many of the current fashion trends are mirroring my 90’s wardrobe.

If you are considering making some fashion investments, now is the perfect time to fill those gaps in your timeless essential wardrobe here are my suggestions.

Let’s dig in.

Outerwear

Leather (or faux leather) jacket

Yes, please!

A leather jacket is a classic. Simple and chic. It’s great to layer over casual jeans and chunky sweaters but also adds a je ne sais quoi to more feminine dresses or silhouettes.

Camel wool coat

On chilly mornings this will feel as cozy as a pumpkin spice latte. Wear it any time of the day and for any occasion. Throw it over your boyfriend jeans or black pants, with trainers or ankle boots. A modern classic that will keep you warm.

Dress

Sweater Dress

No time to get dressed in the morning? Cue the chunky knit sweater dress. Your favorite fall shoes – boots, sneakers, heels – will work with this season staple.

Tops

Tweed Blazer

Every season needs a grown-up piece. The tweed blazer is my pick for the Fall Capsule Wardrobe 2020. Whether plaid or herringbone, if you pair it with skinny jeans, add boots, this combination looks great. A print scarf will give you some glam.

Basic tees

Speaking of wardrobe essentials, you don’t need me to tell you why a basic tee deserves a spot in your Fall Capsule Wardrobe 2020.

This versatile closet staple comes with endless stylish possibilities, no matter what your age, season, or occasion. Prove me wrong!

Silk button-down blouse

Now that I work from home, I have left behind all my shirts except this one. No matter if you are going to the office or if you’re zoom-meeting, wear a silk blouse and you will look polished and together. Heading to town for a drink? No need to change.

Sweaters & Cardigans

Sweaters are the foundation of every Fall Capsule Wardrobe. A sweater or cardigan is a wonderful all-around item of clothing that will blend in well with most of your outfits.

This year, I chose sweaters that are warm, thick, and slightly oversized.

If you want to give this wardrobe staple an update, color-block sweaters are certainly a thing now!

Bottoms

Black leggings

Since this capsule contains plenty of loose sweaters, I am not ready to surrender my black leggings. Try leather or faux leather ones if you want to upgrade this season’s essential.

Mom Jeans

If you lean a bit more on the trendy side but want to be cozy, reach for my favorite comfortable cut of denim, which can be worn well through the colder months. Dress it up with a long wool coat and heels or down with a sweater and sneakers.

Black Slouchy Pants

For those occasions where denim won’t cut it. You can dress these up with pumps when going out to dinner or down with sneakers to run an errand.

Accessories

Ankle Boots

Boots are the ultimate fall shoes. With or without a heel. Smooth leather or suede. Whatever your preference, a pair of boots will be the most versatile shoes in your closet.
Chelsea ankle boots are probably the ones I wear the most.

Knee-high boots

It’s easy to understand why knee-high boots have stood the test of time. They are a snap to style with leggings, a loose chunky knit dress, or any shirt and denim combination. No matter the style or the height of the heel, a pair of knee-high boots will make any look gorgeous. They are a great addition to a woman’s closet.

Basic Sneakers

Because when I say “easy and comfortable” I mean it!

Scarf

What could be better for fall than wrapping yourself up in a scarf? To feel polished, sophisticated, trendy.

Pick one in a neutral color that matches everything. Because trust me, you will want to wear it with everything.

Small Hand Bag

Just enough to carry around your essentials (phone, hand sanitizer, and mask). It will work with all your outfits.

Tote Bag

From work to the gym, from shopping to dinner, it can provide for every possibility in your day. An indispensable investment piece if you want to “have it all together”.

Bottom Line

The possibilities are endless in building a worthy Fall Capsule Wardrobe. I’ve shared with you my must-have pieces in this collection.
This new stay-at-home reality has made me a lot more of a minimalist than before and has allowed me to get creative with the items I already have in my closet.

And remember, by shopping intentionally and choosing carefully what pieces to invest in, you are saving money for the important things in your life.😉

Happy Birthday (belated!)! I love your style and point of view. So much so that I’ve fallen in love with two of the sweaters in the main photo — the color block on the left about four rows down and the camel partial-cable on the right. They don’t appear in the links so I’m guessing they’re from a different season. But can you tell me the designer and approximate year? I want to look in consignment for them. Thank you!!!!
