Loungewear and tracksuits have been the most worn items during the lockdown. No surprise that it feels like a little fashion bomb is about to explode for Summer 2020.

I bet you could do with some new summer looks. Well, my new Summer Capsule Wardrobe 2020 will provide lots of inspiration.

The best bit? This summer capsule wardrobe will mainly use your closet staples to maximize outfit potential.

When it comes to getting dressed, I am a big fan of timeless basics. Still, every new season I love adding a couple of up-to-the-minute items to make it fresh.
This year I am crazy for animal prints and paprika.

My Summer Capsule Wardrobe 2020 includes a selection of 29 on-trend summer essentials, including 9 coordinating tops, 9 bottoms, 3 dresses, and 9 key items to complement your outfit formula. With these pieces, you will have the confidence in creating the right outfit for every occasion.

New to the capsule wardrobe world? Then have a look at this step-by-step guide.

Does all this sound difficult? It’s not! All it takes is some planning.
The final goal is to make your dressing routine stress-free by creating your summer capsule wardrobe from items that look great on you and that you love wearing.

In brief, here are the steps to building your perfect summer capsule wardrobe:

Step 1 – Think about your lifestyle. Is summer a big time for garden parties and lots of socializing? Or do you mostly spend time close to home or at the beach?

Step 2 – Choose your color palette. Choose your base colors first, then a couple of coordinating colors, and finally add 1 or 2 accent colors. Ideally, all the colors should go well with each other. It’s easier to start with a capsule of 4 to 5 colors max. Choose colors that you love wearing, as well as look good with your hair color and complexion.

Step 3 – Pick your essential items from your core wardrobe. Perfectly fitted jeans, your favorite white tee, that little black dress. Make sure you have enough versatile pieces that fit well and make you feel your absolute best. Doing so will guarantee you have plenty of outfits to choose from.

You can check my selection of timeless essential items here.

Step 4 – If you want you can purchase a few items that will tune your capsule into the current trends. These will complete your fashion puzzle. Four to five new pieces will breathe new life into your essential collection. A pair of strappy sandals, a new handbag, or a top in this season’s most popular color, the choice is yours 🙂

Step 5 – Put your outfit together. Here is where your hard work pays off:) Since your capsule wardrobe has only things that you love, look great on you and are in colors that work well together, you can’t go wrong!

First, choose a key item. Then, assemble the remaining complementary pieces, taking into consideration what kind of occasion you are dressing for. Finish with accessories.

And now that we know what to do, let’s get to work on building your perfect summer capsule wardrobe for 2020.

Dress Code

My summer capsule wardrobe is very versatile and allows for dozens of outfit combinations. I never have to tire of throwing on the same ol’ thing.

Smart-casual is the look that I go for. A relaxed yet “smart” way of dressing that will fit many occasions and relies on the power of stylish details.

In this scenario, a slightly oversized white shirt can be tied at the front, creating a sophisticated touch. Mixing smooth and refined textiles with everyday fabrics achieves a “Coco approved” style balance. The wow factor is brought forth with accessories.

Colore Palette

A capsule collection color palette is created by choosing the base colors first, the coordinating colors after, and finally, the accent colors.

Here you can see my choices.

I put together a selection of 7 Pantone shades. The 3 basic colors are white, beige, and black.

These are the colors that I will be using for 60% of all summer capsule outfits. They are the dominant colors, but they don’t necessarily have to be present in every outfit since all the other colors work together well.

The 2 coordinating colors I have chosen are cognac (mostly used for accessories), and denim blue. These are the colors that will compliment your outfits. Already at this point, you can create several minimalist outfits without sacrificing style.

But I aim to go one better. So, now I add the accents: leopard animal print and paprika.

A well-conceived capsule wardrobe will allow you to unleash your imagination and provide a multitude of different outfits to wear. And finding a palette of 7 different colors where they all match interchangeably? Nailed it 🙂

Selection of items

To ensure that your summer capsule wardrobe is functional and matches your lifestyle, choose your main, pivotal items first.

Below you will find my selection.

The Summer Capsule Wardrobe 2020

This summer capsule wardrobe relies strongly upon very basic tops such as plain cotton tanks in white and black. This is what I wear most days when I need something simple and straightforward. And they work as a perfect blank canvas when matched with a statement piece.Be that as it may, I’ve fallen for a couple of eye-catching tops like the metallic-finish tank and the paprika cami.

I love pairing plain tees with skirts, shorts, or pants. They look particularly flattering tucked into high-waisted styles.

When it comes to t-shirts, it’s all about the quality of the material and the cut of the sleeves! The 45° cut is distinctly feminine.

Long Sleeved Tops

Hoping there won’t be much need for long sleeves this summer, I include one white shirt I plan to wear tied at the front and a denim jacket. These are basics that are easy to layer on cooler days and they pair with dresses or jeans.

Ah, the beauty of a solid-color summer dress! Ideally, you will choose dresses that are easy to wash, lightweight, and don’t wrinkle too easily. This could be a nice wrap dress in a cotton jersey or a casual shift dress in rayon.

This year I bought myself a patterned black dress and a plain white one. Both are very versatile. Easy-to-wear yet glamorous at the same time. The right accessories will help to address the occasion.

I love keeping my tops on the plain side and, of course, I include here basic, plain jeans in denim blue, white, and black. But I also treated myself to 2 new pleated skirts, 1 in a neutral color and the other in animalier, together with a pair of pleated pants in sand. And let’s not forget a pair of denim shorts.

I’ve covered the basics here from the leather, minimalist sandals to the white sneakers. A variety of bags will make sure you are ready for any occasion. While sunglasses, a couple of belts, and a long necklace will make sure to add some glam to any outfit.

If you are looking for some inspiration check 15 seriously gorgeous summer outfits where you can see many of the items included in the summer capsule wardrobe 2020.

You can find all those pieces listed in the gallery below.

Bottom Line:

Building a capsule wardrobe is not just something I write about, but something I strongly believe in.

When I created my first capsule wardrobe a few years ago, I was converted and never looked back. It’s been a big win for my dressing routine and my wallet too.

A closet filled with timeless staples paired with carefully-selected, on-trend pieces frees you of that “nothing to wear” feeling. Crafted with purpose, it’s a very cost-effective and sustainable way to manage your wardrobe. With the added benefit of looking fabulous every day.

Nice overview. I don’t have any skirts and only have dresses for special occasions so my own capsule wardrobe is slightly different:

    2 black pants

    2 jeans (1 straight, 1 bootcut)

    2 shorts (1 jeans, 1 black)

As tops I have 2 tank tops (1 black, 1 white), five shirts (1 black, 1 white, 1 gray, 2 with prints), 3 long sleeved shirts (1 striped, 1 solid grey and 1 solid black)

Jackets are 1 jeans jacket, 1 cardigan (grey), 1 hoodie jacket (black)

Shoes: 1 pair of black sandals, 3 pair of sneakers (grey, black, white)

I don’t have a lot of accesoires save for scarves which are colourful and I don’t have a limit on it because they are the ones who steal the show when I wear them because of my muted colour palette.

My base colours are white, grey, black, complimenting colours are denim and soft pink. Accent colours are various and come in the form of the scarves :p

      HI ENSJ!

sounds like you put together a really nice capsule! 🙂 I am intrigued … I’d love to see a pic of it, especially of your scarf collection! 🙂 I do love scarves too… when I spend my Summer holidays in my home country I love using big scarves as a top or as a cover up for the beach! 🙂

I just wanted to say thank you for this post. Full disclosure: I’m the absolute worst at clothes, like, I can’t put an outfit together to save my life. I ended up screen capping your graphic and using it like a worksheet while I shopped for some key pieces. Your little bit of guidance made it so much easier for me to mix and match a bunch of complimentary outfits together!

Please do another capsule wardrobe post for the Fall!
